Round 5 NMRRL – Torworth Race Report – 30th June 2016

Big crash in the B group, fortunately DJ managed to miss the worst of it but still came down, chased back as best he could but missed catching those not involved.

Updated results

The fifth race of this years NMRRL saw a return for the 2nd time to the Torworth circuit and was contested by Groups A & B.

The Group A race exploded into life on the 2nd of the 7 laps with a group of 6 riders consisting of Jamie Burgan, Andy Nichols (both Langsett Cycles RT), Steve Ellis, Rob Mitchell, Jack Stephenson (all Out of the Saddle CC) & Marc Etches (Sheffrec CC) opening up a 10 second gap. During the 3rd lap the race came together and split again with a new 7 man group going clear featuring Burgan, Nichols, Ellis, Stephenson & Mitchell from the first breakaway with the addition of Danny Lowthorpe (Rutland CC) & Dan Stephenson (Out of the Saddle CC) with the gap being 20 seconds. At 3 laps to go, the leading group had increased their advantage to 40 seconds and a lap later to well over a minute. At the bell, Burgan & Mitchell had attacked, opening up a significant lead over the rest of their fellow breakaways.
Burgan proved to be the strongest at the finish, easily outsprintining Mitchell to take the win with Jack Stephenson winning the sprint for 3rd place ahead of Nichols, Lowthorpe, Dan Stephenson & Ellis but over a minute down on Burgan. Etches won the bunch sprint for the minor placings with Pete Collins (Sharrow CC) & Luke Allen (Sheffrec CC) rounding off the top ten.
After 4 races, the enforced absence of Joe Elwood (Langsett Cycles RT) enabled Jack Stephenson to draw level at the top of the Group A Overall Standings, with Burgan moving into 3rd place just one point behind & Mitchell a further 2 points back.

The Group B race was overshadowed by a large crash involving many riders just after half distance. Before that point, Luke Lunde-Pickover (TLI) had opened up a small gap at the end of the first lap and 2 laps later, Adam Lathbury (Rutland CC) held a 10 second advantage on the bunch. However, the crash had the biggest effect on the race with approximately half the field being affected in one way or another. Daryl Plant (Out of the Saddle CC) & Jack Rowland (Harworth & District CC) were able to open up a 15 second advantage on a greatly reduced bunch with 2 laps to go and at the bell, the duo had increased their lead to 26 seconds.
At the finish, Group B Overall Leader, Rowland easily outsprinted Plant to take his 2nd win of the Series with Robert Fowler (Rutland CC) winning the bunch sprint ahead of Graham Waller (Sharrow CC) & Lunde-Pickover.
Rowland now has a substantial lead in the Group B Overall Standings benefiting from his nearest challengers Alan Wailoo (7 Hills CC) & Steve Bunting (Rutland CC) both being absent and Andrew Cutts (Team Bottrill) being one of the riders worst affected in the crash.

Round 4 NMRRL – Dinnington Race Report – 23rd June 16

Once again not our words below, but a lot of fun was had, JP remembered his shoes which was a plus and led into the last corner and acted as leadout man for Ed who managed to hold on for 3rd and Rob scored his first points of the year with a solid 8th.

Allan didn’t compete in group B due to a school sports day parents race incident! Joycey performed well as usual.

The fourth race of this years NMRRL saw a return to the Dinnington circuit and was contested by Groups B & C.

The Group B race was the most eventful of the three so far. James Mappin (Geared Up Cycles) held a small lead over Chris Last (Carnac/Planet X) & Steve Bunting (Rutland CC) at the end of the first lap, with the bunch 12 seconds back. A lap later and it was the turn of Adam Lathbury (Rutland CC) to open up a 10 second advantage on the bunch. At half distance, Rupert Pearson (Rutland CC) & Graham Walton (Common Lane Occasionals) now held a small advantage which, a lap later, they had increased to 20 seconds over Jake Harrison (Bolsover & District CC) with the bunch a further 6 seconds back. At the bell, the leading duo were still out in front with Richard Stevenson (Rutland CC) just about the bridge the gap and the bunch having reduced their advantage to 20 seconds.

In the end, it all came down to a bunch sprint where Bunting proved to be the strongest ahead of Joseph Law (Doncaster Wheelers) & Jack Rowland (Harworth & District CC) with Daryl Plant (Out of the Saddle CC) & Rob Blackburn (TLI) rounding off the top five.

Rowland’s 3rd place enabled him to increase his lead in the Group B Overall Standings ahead of first week winner Wailoo with Bunting moving into 3rd place.

In the Group C race, Richard Lambert (Out of the Saddle CC) & Edward Davies (7 Hills CC) held a small advantage at the end of the first lap. A lap later and it was the turn of Chris Cunningham (Out of the Saddle CC) to open up a 7 second advantage on the bunch, which he had increased to 17 seconds by half distance. With 2 laps to go, Cunningham’s solo breakaway had been nullified and it was Lambert, once more, making an effort but the bunch were determined not to let anyone get away and the race stayed together over the closing laps.

The bunch sprint was clearly won by Mark Barnard (Out of the Saddle CC) ahead of debutant, Alexander Prince (TLI) with Davies in 3rd place & last year’s Group C winner Garry Hill (Dinnington RC) in 4th.

After just 2 races, Barnard now has a clear lead in the Group C Overall Standings, ahead of first race winner John Catley (Barnsley Road Club) & Prince.

Round 3 NMRRL – Serlby Race Report – 16th June 2016

We had two in group B this week, and 4 on marshalling duties.

Race report from Stephen Ellis:

The third race of this years NMRRL was contested by Groups A & B on the new Serlby circuit.

A breakaway established itself on the second of the 6 lap race featuring Jamie Burgan, Joe Elwood & Andy Nichols (all Langsett Cycles RT) & Rob Mitchell, Jack Stephenson (both Out of the Saddle CC) who opened up a 25 second lead by the end of the lap. At half distance the gap had increased to 45 seconds. With 2 laps to go, Burgan attacked, opening up a small advantage on the rest of the breakaway with the bunch holding the gap steady at 45 seconds. However, Burgan’s breakaway was short lived with Mitchell & Stephenson working well together to bring the leading group back together again. At the bell, the leaders now held a 55 second advantage on Steve Ellis (Out of the Saddle CC) who had attacked and opened up a small advantage on the bunch.
During the last lap, it was the turn of Elwood to attack which he was able to sustain and solo in to take his 2nd successive victory with Stephenson taking 2nd place, on his own, 20 seconds down on the winner. Nichols came in a further 12 seconds back to take 3rd place with Burgan and Mitchell in 4th & 5th places respectively, both 40 seconds behind Elwood. Behind, Ellis’ attack was nullified by the bunch, but he was determined not to be denied, and attacked again, this time holding his advantage all the way to the finish to take 6th place just under a minute and a half down on Elwood. Marc Etches (Sheffrec CC) won the bunch sprint for 7th place, a few seconds further back, ahead of Daniel Stephenson (Out of the Saddle CC) with Harry White (Bikeboxalan) & Paul Uttley (Out of the Saddle CC) completing the top ten.
After 3 races, Elwood now leads the Group A Overall Standings ahead of the absent Ben Turner (TLI) with Jack Stephenson moving into 3rd place.

In the Group B race, Chris Last (Carnac/Planet X) & Graham Walton (Common Lane Occasionals) held a small lead at the end of the first lap, after which the race stayed together until 2 laps to go when Jake Morgan (Sheffrec CC) attacked and opened up an advantage. At the bell, it was now a trio of Rob Blackburn (TLI), Alex Leyland (Out of the Saddle CC) & Last again, trying to form a breakaway but the bunch were determined not to let anyone get away.
At the finish, Jack Rowland (Harworth & District CC) was a clear winner of the bunch sprint, several lengths ahead of Andrew Cutts (Team Botterill) with Alan Wailoo (7 Hills CC), Steve Bunting (Rutland CC) & James Mappin (Geared Up Cycles) rounding off the top five.
Rowland takes the lead in the Group B Overall Standings ahead of first week winner Wailoo with Cutts in 3rd place.

Round 2 NMRRL – Torworth Race Report – 9th June 2016

We had 5 riders racing in group C for round 2 – 4 novices lined up with only Rob having raced this series before. JP making the rookie error of forgetting his cycling shoes so completed the race in trainers – he won’t be making that mistake again!

The other 4 were close to the front going into the final turn, unleashing sprints a bit prematurely but with Kris holding on for 5th, Rob I got boxed in, Ed got overtaken with about 300m to go having tried an audacious long range attack. Jake & JP rolled in towards the back of the bunch.

Again not our words but the words of NMRRL:

Race 2 Torworth 09/06/16

The NMRRL returned to North Nottinghamshire roads after a forced 3 year absence with the second races at Torworth in clear, sunny conditions featuring Groups A & C.

Jamie Tune (Bikeboxalan) opened up a 7 second gap at the end of the first of seven laps, but was quickly reeled in. A lap later, it was the turn of ex-double NMRRL Champion Jamie Burgan (Langsett Cycles RT) who held a 10 second advantage but the rest of the field were not allowing him to get too far ahead and his lead was reduced to a slender 7 seconds at the end of the 3rd lap. Burgan was caught soon after which lead to a counter attack with current NMRRL Champion, Joe Elwood (Langsett Cycles RT) & Ben Turner (TLI) opening up a 10 second gap on the bunch which they increased slightly to 12 seconds with 2 laps to go with the bunch still chasing hard. It was only at the bell that the duo looked to have secured a race winning move, increasing their lead to 25 seconds.

At the finish, Elwood edged out Turner in a closely fought sprint with ex-double NMRRL Champion Marc Etches (Sheffrec CC) winning the bunch sprint for 3rd place ahead of Pete Collins (Sharrow CC) in 4th & Burgan in 5th.
After 2 races, Turner now leads the Group A Overall Standings ahead of Elwood & Dan Stephenson (Out of the Saddle CC) who was absent this week.

The first Group C race stayed together pretty much all through the race with only Chico Taylor (Rutland CC) opening up a small advantage on the rest of the field at the bell. John Catley (Barnsley Road Club) won the bunch sprint comfortably to take the win, with Mark Barnard (Out of the Saddle CC) just edging out Ross Limbert (BBM Revolution) for 2nd place.

Round 1 NMRRL – Dinnington Race Report – 3rd June 2016

Not our words but a good race report about the NMRRL at Dinnington last Thursday – ignore all about group A – who want’s to race in that one anyway!

Allan

The 2016 NMRRL finally got under way with Groups A & B contesting the first races at Dinnington in clear, sunny conditions.

After 2 laps of the Group A race, a breakaway consisting of Steve Ellis, Dan Stephenson (both Out of the Saddle CC) & Ben Turner (TLI) held a slender 10 second gap on the bunch which they extended to sizeable 45 seconds just a lap later. With 2 laps to go, this lead was reduced to 35 seconds but with the leading trio working well together, they once again opened up their advantage to 55 seconds by the bell. At the finish, a closely fought sprint saw Stephenson take the win by just half a wheel over Turner with Ellis in 3rd place. Jack Stephenson (Out of the Saddle CC) won the bunch sprint for 4th place ahead of team-mate Rob Mitchell with Matthew Harris (Sheffrec CC) in 6th, 29 seconds behind the leading trio.

The Group B race stayed together until half distance when Robert Fowler (Rutland CC) held a small advantage on the rest of the field. A lap later, it was the turn of Allan Wailoo (7 Hills CC), who had opened up a 23 second lead. At the bell, Wailoo, riding strongly, increased his lead to 28 seconds which he held comfortably over the closing lap to take a well deserved win. Jack Rowland (Harworth & District CC) won the bunch sprint for 2nd place ahead of Andrew Cutts (Team Bottrill) & Fowler in 3rd & 4th places respectively.
